Ancestors’ Gift
24”x24” canvas
tempera, oil, ink pigments
Ancestors gift was started in the solace of my own home studio. It began as a motion, it was propelled with sonic-driving. I swooped the brush across it in the beginning and beat on it like a drum, with the brush as a drumstick. Imbuing the painting with the rhythm of the heartbeat.
Through the on-going process of this painting, I took it to the Dallas drum-djam several times, where it was further enveloped in drum rhythms and heart beats. The head drummer was moved by the piece and it now resides with him. He adopted it mid-process and so it seemed appropriate to etch him into the narrative of the piece, and so he’s etched below the mushroom.
He’s surrounded by fellow drummers and meditators. Their combined intent and prayers flow and sync together, rising with the mushrooms cohesion. They’re under the shelter of a mushroom wizard. At their edges are two grand dragon spirits entwining with the circle.
A few ways to bring it home…
